New Jersey Sues Discord for Allegedly Failing to Protect Children
The state of New Jersey has filed a lawsuit against popular messaging platform Discord, alleging that the company has failed to adequately protect children from harmful content and interactions on its platform.
The lawsuit, filed in Superior Court, claims that Discord has allowed minors to be exposed to inappropriate material, including explicit conversations and images, without taking sufficient measures to prevent such content from being shared.
New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal stated, “Discord has a responsibility to prioritize the safety and well-being of its young users, and our investigation has revealed that they have failed to do so. We will not tolerate any company that puts children at risk.”
The lawsuit seeks to hold Discord accountable for its alleged negligence in protecting minors and calls for the company to implement stricter safeguards to prevent minors from accessing harmful content.
Discord, which is popular among gamers and other online communities, has faced scrutiny in the past for its role in facilitating inappropriate behavior and harassment on its platform.
In response to the lawsuit, a spokesperson for Discord stated, “We take the safety of our users, especially minors, very seriously. We are committed to working with authorities to address any concerns and improve the safety of our platform.”
This lawsuit comes at a time when regulators and lawmakers are increasingly focusing on the responsibility of tech companies to protect children online, amid growing concerns about the impact of social media and messaging platforms on young users.
New Jersey’s lawsuit against Discord is just the latest in a series of legal actions taken against tech companies for failing to protect children online, signaling a larger shift towards holding these companies accountable for the content and interactions that take place on their platforms.
As the case unfolds, it remains to be seen how Discord will respond to the allegations and what measures the company will take to ensure the safety of its young users in the future.
